Case study - give it a go with Liam

When Liam Greening, 23, left school with 8 GCSEs, he wasn't sure what his next move should be.

"I wouldn't have believed what I would be doing 6 years later," he says. "I passed through the usual ‘just get a job till something better rolls along' positions - warehouse worker, office worker - but nothing grabbed me."

Thanks to a chance interview, Liam is now an Adult Support Worker, at the Brandon Trust in Bristol.

When he thinks back to being 14 years old, he laughs at what he was like. "I just wouldn't have imagined me doing this back then to be honest." But he's glad he made that decision to go for an interview two years ago, because since then he's been launched into a challenging and enjoyable career in adult social care.

His role is to support tenants with learning difficulties live a normal life in their home. "My main task is to ensure the four tenants lead as normal a life as possible, and they live everyday life just like me or you really."

Liam would recommend the role to others, even if they haven't thought about working in adult social care. Although all his training has been on the job, he would have welcomed the chance to experience work in adult social care before leaving school. "I probably wasted 3 years working in an office and in a warehouse trying to find something I enjoy."

What would he say to other young people thinking about their future?

"I'd say just give this a go - that's what I did and I haven't looked back. Knowing that you're helping people and doing something rewarding is the best part of the job."
