Introduction

The Society, Health and Development (SHD) Diploma is the result of one of the biggest advances in demand-led learning for the last forty years.

Employers from the private, public and voluntary sectors have had the opportunity to make a contribution to the development of SHD through the Diploma Development Partnership (DDP).

We are delighted that SHD will be available from September 2008. The qualification will provide a stimulating and diverse programme of general and applied learning. It will be a challenging qualification that has young people firmly at its heart.

We already have a wide variety of employers on board with a first wave of consortia offering SHD in September 2008. (Link to case study of SHAPE consortium - or Plymouth or NW Academy - to be supplied)

Now we need more employers who can help deliver SHD in their local area.

Susan Goldstein, North East Strategic Health Authority, said:

"The DDP and the SSCs involved in the Diploma have taken on this role with enthusiasm and commitment seeking to shape a new offer of learning for young people which will give them a valuable insight into health, social care and children's services.

"This insight will enable them to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes which will equip them for the world of work whatever they choose to do for their future.

"The Diploma development has provided an opportunity for employers to influence the shape and form of work-related education to ensure that it will better equip young people for the challenges ahead."
